Press release – “Islamophobia without Muslims”

Islamophobia is widespread not only in Western Europe, but also in Eastern Europe – where in some areas very few Muslims live and where the population often only knows Islam and Muslims from the media. This phenomenon is referred to as “Islamophobia without Muslims” by several of the researchers who have contributed to a just-published special issue from the Leipzig-based Leibniz ScienceCampus “Eastern Europe – Global Area” (EEGA). Entitled Understanding and Explaining Islamophobia in Eastern Europe, the special issue is dedicated to this hitherto somewhat overlooked topic. “Overall, it can be said that Islamophobia is on the rise in Eastern Europe – and there are parallels with Western Europe,” comments Dr Alexander Yendell, sociologist at Leipzig University and editor of the freely available online publication.
