Prof Judith Pallot
Her first book, Planning in the Soviet Union (Croom Helm, 1980) was on spatial planning in the USSR but most of her early books and publications were on the rural economy and society in Russia from the nineteenth century to the present day. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, she was able to embark on field work on household production in diverse rural regions in Russia with colleagues from the Academy of Sciences and Perm State University. In the past decade, she has developed a research interest in Russia’s penal geography and she has written two books on the current penal system: “Gender Geography and Punishment: Women’s experiences of Carceral Russia” (OUP, 2012) and “Waiting at the Prison Gate: Womne, identity and Punishment in Russia” (I.B.Tauris, 2016).
Throughout her career Professor Pallot has worked hard to develop links with colleagues in the USSR and its successor states. In the late 1980s, she established an exchange programme for Geographers in the USSR to come to Oxford and she was also actively involved in early postgraduate programmes for graduates in the humanities and social sciences to become visiting students at the University of Oxford. At the present time she is President of the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies a post she will hold until 2019.
