Research Project: Self-Positioning of Belarus in the World Order of Global Competition: between Russia, China and European Ambition
Maryia Danilovich is an Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations, Belarusian State University (https://bsu.by/en/). Her research interests focus on China’s foreign policy in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Maryia holds a PhD in History, obtained for her thesis on China’s Foreign Policy in Central Asia in 2001 – 2013. Her background in Oriental Studies (with a focus on China) allowed her, as part of her doctoral research, to conduct fieldwork in China and the Central Asian states. Maryia Danilovich’s most recent publications focus on the implementation of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI): Bridging Westward to Open the Gates of Europe: Implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative in Central Asia and Belarus (in How China’s Silk Road Initiative is Changing the Global Economic Landscape, Routledge, 2020), Belt and Road Initiative in 2020: a New Assessment (in The Eurasian Network of Regional Initiatives and Organisations: Elements of Interconnectedness, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Policy Paper, 2020).
Maryia was a postdoctoral Swedish Institute fellow at the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Uppsala University in 2018-2019 and presented guest lecturers and invited talks at the University of Göttingen, the Swedish Institute of International Affairs and Södertörn University, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chinese Institute of International Affairs, University of Duisburg-Essen. Since 2019 she has been co-developing a Digital Humanities Platform for comprehensive analysis and mapping of the BRI (https://briresearch.home.blog/).
During her fellowship at EEGA Maryia Danilovich will start a new research project, dealing with self-positioning of Belarus in the world order of global competition (between Russia, China and European ambition). She will focus on how China’s BRI influences the self-positioning of Belarus.
